| Harris' database is a reference tool for sales and marketing professionals. It contains information on more than 600,000 U.S. businesses. The database covers the entire manufacturing sector, including branch and headquarters locations. The three major groups covered in the database are manufacturing, services and all-business, which is a combination of manufacturing and services. Segment coverage includes high tech and electronics manufacturers. Company profiles list mailing address, telemarketing information and full profiles with 35 information fields. There are several ways to purchase this information. The traditional print directory has four sections that allow you to find prospects in specific geographic areas or industries. Prices vary by and size of target company. There are print and CD-Rom versions of both the Reference Directories and the Selectory Databases, that give you search, sort, print and export options. And there's a free 7-day trial of the online database available at the site.
| HotBot, owned by Lycos, is a favorite among researchers and the Web elite because of its many power search features. To begin with, it offers the ability to search either HotBot, Google, Lycos or Ask Jeeves in one place. Since it's not a metasearch engine, it won't blend the results, but the benefit is that you can integrate any of HotBot's advanced features into your searches all in one convenient place. For example, you can add any advanced search requirement to your HotBot home page, so you can basically build your own advanced launching pad feature by feature. Date filters? Word filters? Media requirements (returned pages must include images, Shockwave, Real Audio/Video, Java, Acrobat or MP3 files, for example)? No problem! Another worthwhile place to build your advanced searching skills.
| Ixquick‘s metasearch tool applies your search query to 13 search engines. Results are ranked according to how relevant each of the search engines consider each returned website to be to your search. You can search for for MP3 files, photo and news as well. Ixquick supports regular searches, natural
language searches and advanced Boolean searches, and knows which engines handle what types of searches. One of the cool features of Ixquick is that you can select or deselect the search engines that you want queried in your metasearch.
It’s also available in 14 languages.
| Welcome to the Managerial Technologies Corporation Resource Libraries
, which is an insurance resource site with 16,000 risk management and insurance resources. The Library covers topics such as insurance, laws and regulations, environmental engineering and many other subjects. The newest hot topic is Disasters, with topics on agriculture, alerts, animals, biochem, bomb threats, dam safety, counter-terrorism, etc. When you click on a category, a list is returned of the latest bulletins and alerts. In order to drill down further, you need to subscribe. An annual subscription costs $299.95(US); a one-month subscription runs $35.95(US).
| MSN Search does two things that might be of interest to marketing folks: First off, like the old Ask Jeeves, it answers any question that you type into the search box. Now, it can't tell you whether or not you'll get a raise next week, but it does concisely answer most factual questions by drawing upon the vast resources of the Encarta encyclopedia. Should you need more information that the short answer provided, you can access Encarta at no cost for two hours, which saves you the monthly $4.95(US) subscription fee. The second thing that might intrigue you is that MSN Search allows you to easily build filters that will refine all answers delivered to you (click on the Search Builder link). For example, you can search all websites linking to a specific URL for particular keyword, or you can choose to search only those sites that rank highly on the MSN Search popularity scale. Worth a visit.

| Real, live human editors have been adding sites to the the Open Directory
since 1998. These volunteers are experts in their categories, and they devote their time to creating the best subject directories humanly possible. Because of the quality listings and the fact that the Open Directory is an open source project (anyone can use it as a directory on their site with a simple licensing agreement), the Open Directory provides the directory listings for many major sites, including Google, AOL and Lycos. By getting your site listed in the Open Directory, you will help it propagate throughout the Web. But to use the Open Directory, do consider going through Google and using the Google Directory version, which incorporates Google's relevancy algorithms and link popularity analysis to organize the listings based on content relevance, rather than alphabetically.
| Technorati is a Web log ("blog") research tool which tracks nearly 2 million blogs. Looking for a blog on your subject of interest? Search this blog-only search tool by keyword to find relevant resources. A recent
search for the keyword "marketing" turned up 19,794 fascinating
marketing-focused blogs which this editor needs to explore. Sigh. Other
tools include watchlists of the most popular blogs, the newest blogs, the "buzz" and link trackers which list and count the number of sites linking a particular blog so you can judge just how connected that blog's author is.
| If you're looking for a European manufacturer, you can search here through 210,000 industrial suppliers, organized by 10,500 industrial product classifications, in 6 languages and from 17 European countries. This venerated directory is also available via a no-cost CD-ROM. It includes a European overview, coverage of industrial suppliers and complete contact and buying information. The CD is free to qualified buyers who fill out a qualifying questionnaire. By the way, Thomas also produces directories for the United States.
| Vivisimo is not a search engine, but defines itself as a "clustering engine"
that can organize any pile of data into neat little hierarchies and
categories on the fly. The tool that you access at the home page is basically a demo of its enterprise-level software, but don't look a gift horse in the mouth - it's an excellent research resource for marketers. Type in a search term, and Vivisimo will quickly query multiple search engines (LookSmart, Lycos, MSN and Netscape) for their search results. It will then organize the search results into neatly categorized "clusters" which you can explore based on which cluster seems to most closely match what you had in mind. Vivisimo is definitely a time-saving metasearch engine to know.
| "The World's Largest Directory of Products and Services," WAND is an advanced B2B online trade directory with listings of over 65,000 products and services. Available in 16 languages, this service connects buyers and sellers from nearly 1 million companies and 165 countries. There are several ways to search WAND. If you put in a search by product category, say for "scanner", multiple categories of scanners are returned; next you get companies carrying that product and you can drill down from there. You can also search by company name, general product or service categories, or by 6-diget HS code, which they'll help you find. There's also a database of tradeshow listings, global news and country information. Don't forget to check out how to go about listing yourself as a buyer or seller.
