A9Email to a Colleague

Are you aware of all the additional features available in the downloadable A9 search toolbar that make it an excellent choice for marketers? First of all, since Amazon.com owns website-ranking company Alexa, it will come as no surprise to learn that Alexa's ranking information is incorporated right into the A9 toolbar, which eliminates the need to toggle back and forth between your Alexa toolbar and a search engine to get the lowdown on any website. Second, A9 is powered by the Google database, so if Google is your search engine of choice (and you don't use the Google toolbar), that base is covered. What A9 also brings to the table are Amazon.com's excellent search features: the "Search Inside the Book" technology (useful when researching marketing concepts, authors or current trends); a stored search history, which updates itself whenever you conduct a search that you have previously run so you can see your click history plus whatever new or unexplored resources are available; and the ability to make and store notes on your searches for future reference. You can also seamlessly search Amazon.com (of course), the Internet Movie Database, a dictionary and a thesaurus.

A9 Local SearchEmail to a Colleague

Amazon's A9 search engine features a unique twist called Block View, which allows users to view storefront images when doing a business search. For instance, put in Macy's and you'll get lots of Macy's images, logos, product shots and especially parade shots. You also see images of buildings and the space on either side of the business you select, so if you want to find a store near Macy's but can't remember the name of it, you might find it by viewing the Macy's photos. To pull this off, A9 took over 20 million photographs in the top 10 markets. As with Amazon, users can review businesses on a 1 to 5 star rating scale. Watch this feature expand as cities are added and business owners are able to modify listings, content and graphics.

AlltheWebEmail to a Colleague

AlltheWeb.com is highly respected search engine where you can search not only for websites but also for news, pictures, video clips, MP3s and FTP files. Some may argue that its advanced search features are easier to use than those of many other search engines. On the advanced search page you can easily include word, IP address or domain name filters, and you can request that results are in a specific file format, that were created/updated on a specific date or are a specific byte size, and much more. You can also customize your preferences to the point where your custom-written queries will be stored and run for you. A good choice for advanced searching.

AltaVista AdvancedEmail to a Colleague

If you want a quick look at your competitor's public presentation, with a peek at pages that may not turn up on a regular search, try out this AltaVista Advanced search trick. You'll get a list of all the internal pages of your target website, so you can zero in on the areas you really want to look at, without going through the entire site to glean the information you really need. Simply enter the command URL:// followed by the domain of your choice in the first advanced search box.

BlinkxEmail to a Colleague

Blinkx is an "always on" search tool that, once downloaded to your computer, constantly searches the Web, broadcast news videos, news sites, blogs, shopping sites and your very own computer hard drive for information relating to whatever you are reading or writing in your active desktop window. It uses self-learning algorithms to understand the context of what appears on your computer screen. As a result, you can seamlessly find resources relating to a specific topic or concept by trolling the Blinkx results listings at any given moment, rather than actively launching a Web or hard drive search (although you can launch a search as well).

Blinkx will search for over 200 media types, such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents, attachments to emails, PDF files and video and audio clips. There is no cost to download and use the tool; it appears that one source of revenue will be sponsored product and service suggestions via the shopping channel.

CISeekEmail to a Colleague

Did you know that there's an Association of Former Intelligence Officers? Discover them and more in The CI Resource Index, the competitive intelligence search engine. Additional categories include: education; companies; publications; software; and documentation, which contains numerous articles and tutorials on the art and science of competitive intelligence.

CompletePlanetEmail to a Colleague

The "deep" Web or "invisible" Web refers to all the content that resides in searchable databases online. Search engines don't pick up this content because the databases only reveal their content in response to a direct query in the form of a dynamic page. Once the query is over, the page disappears, leaving nothing for search engines to spider and categorize. Over the past years many companies have tried to tap into the invisible Web by offering tools that allow you to query thousands of databases at once. These tools can be a treasure trove of information and "deep" resources. Alas, many of the companies have disappeared over the years (or they have eliminated their free interfaces) but one remains - CompletePlanet. Here you can search 103,000 databases and specialty search engines in one fell swoop. You'll also find advanced tools to help you refine these seemingly vast searches into more manageable byte-sized pieces.

Find.comEmail to a Colleague

This search engine is all business, literally. Designed specifically for the corporate or business user, Find.com was created by FIND/SVP, Empire Media and TripleHop Technologies. Utilizing the latest in search technology, results are clustered so that you can easily expand and explore any topic of interest. But it's the results that count, and here the search engine first presents proprietary, fee-based content, then results from more than 3,000 specially selected business sources, and then a melange of search results culled from other search engines. A directory and news related to your topics of inquiry are at hand should further exploration be needed.

GoogleEmail to a Colleague

As Google goes, so goes the world. Online sales surge and dip based on retailers' Google rankings, online marketers follow their Google listings more closely than their stock portfolios, and ordinary mortals "Google" bosses, potential dates and old college roommates in a 21st century version of the reference check. The site's deceptively simple entry way represents both a highly complex search technology and a cultural phenomenon.

Developed by two graduate students at Stanford University in 1998, Google's technology is based on a search algorithm that uses incoming links as an indicator of an individual page's value. Beyond the sheer volume of votes (links) a page receives, Google also analyzes the pages that cast the votes in order to determine page ranking. Thus, high-quality sites receive a higher PageRank, which Google remembers each time it conducts a search. Google combines page ranking with text-matching techniques to find pages that are both important and relevant to a search. But that's not all... you can search for images, news, Usenet commentary, catalog items and more. You can also avail yourself of a seemingly endless (and constantly growing) number of advanced search tools. Get to know Google. It's a marketer's delight.

GrokkerEmail to a Colleague

Grokker is one cool tool that you must see to believe. After downloading it to your computer, it essentially serves as a highly efficient sheepdog, nipping and chuffing at the heels of any data to organize it into related groups of information. Grokker will analyze the search results of any database - for example, a search engine, the files on your hard drive or a product list - and herd it into related categories on the fly. The categories are visually represented as circles so you can see the relationships between them. The download includes three plug-ins: Amazon.com, MyFiles (to search your hard drive or network) and TheWeb, which enables you to search six search engines at once (AltaVista, MSN, WiseNut, Fast, Yahoo and Teoma). Note - the application is built into a fully functional Web browser based on Internet Explorer, so you will either have to switch to the new Grokker browser or unleash Grokker for specific research tasks. A complimentary trial is available at the site; the basic software itself runs $49(US), although far more sophisticated enterprise versions are available.
