AdComparatorEmail to a Colleague

Standard A/B or "split" testing tests one variable at a time, which is quite, well, time-consuming. This no-cost optimization tool allows you to simultaneously test up to 15 different aspects of any advertisement, website or email campaign - which is known as multi-variable (or multivariate) testing - in order to quickly establish the optimum combination of elements for your ad, and thus the highest conversion rate. This tool can test more than 32,000 different combinations with just a handful of test ads. Simply choose the number of elements you want to test (3, 7, 11 or 15), run the ads as outlined, fill in the fields with your copy and response rates, and voila! You will discover which headline, tagline, call to action or what have you works best. This tool is based on the Taguchi Method, which is a statistical technique (refined by Dr. Genechi Taguchi in the 1960s) used to study the effects of multiple variables simultaneously. This popular quality engineering concept is increasingly being applied to website and SEO optimization.

AdWordAcceleratorEmail to a Colleague

AdWordAccelerator is a tool that will help you make more from your Google AdWords campaigns. First of all, you can easily explore new niche markets by using the theme search feature. You can then create keyword lists which follow Google's recommended practice of using thematic clusters to support your ads. Finally, the tool allows you to test literally hundreds of AdGroup ideas to see which ones will meet your cost-per-click and clicks-per-day requirements. If you like what you see, the tool provides an optimized list of keyword phrases for each AdGroup. In theory, the tool "works the system" by optimizing your campaigns exactly how AdWords works. If you'd like to put it in practice, a no-cost, 5-day evaluation trial is available; the tool runs $19.95(US) per month.

AdWords Clickthrough Rate Validity CheckerEmail to a Colleague

How do you know if ad A is really outperforming ad B? This handy, no-cost tool will tell you whether or not you should eliminate one of your Google AdWords creatives. Through the magic of statistics and relevance theory, it determines whether or not you have enough campaign history to eliminate a lower-performing ad. Simply enter the clicks and clickthrough rates as directed. Your results will include a confidence interval figure, which will tell you whether you can safely eliminate an ad or whether you should give it more time to prove itself.

Andrew GoodmanEmail to a Colleague

So you've optimized and analyzed and still nothing's happening? This editor had dinner the other night with Andrew Goodman, the Google AdWords expert. I asked him: "What's the magic formula for a return on my investment at Google?" And he told me this: "Buy my industry leading report, you tight old skinflint!" Google AdWords is a major opportunity in this marketplace. It's still new enough - and confusing enough to the majority of advertisers - that incredible bargains are there for the taking, if you know what you're doing. And when it comes to Pay-Per-Click, my chum Andrew Goodman knows a great deal indeed.

Google APIEmail to a Colleague

With the Google Web APIs service, software developers can query more than 3 billion Web documents directly from their own computer programs. Once you begin defining several advanced queries you want to make, the only safe auto-querying on a large scale must be done through the Google API. "Google uses the SOAP and WSDL standards so a developer can program in his or her favorite environment - such as Java, Perl, or Visual Studio .NET."

Google SmackdownEmail to a Colleague

Not sure which word or phrase to use for your SEM or direct marketing projects? This tool is a marketer's dream, as you can pit two words or phrases "head-to-head in a terabyte tug-of-war" to determine which one is more popular. We were not sure whether to focus this issue around the term "direct marketers" or "direct marketing" so we set up our own Google Smackdown here. The results were illuminating - the term "direct marketing" is about 20 times more popular than "direct marketers". Problem solved.

Linking MattersEmail to a Colleague

The no-cost document at this site is probably one of the most useful, practical, time-saving, no BS roadmaps to link popularity (as it's loosely termed) available anywhere online. The Linking Matters website is an experiment to prove that a strong linking strategy provides a major boost to search engine rankings. The 30+ page PDF download contains your roadmap, as well as 10 worksheets to help walk you through the strategy. This is a five-star online marketing tool.

NicheBOTEmail to a Colleague

By incorporating several of the best no-cost keyword suggestion tools into one interface, NicheBOT makes it very easy to explore and discover new, untapped keywords and topics that you can use to drive more traffic to your website. Simply enter a keyword or phrase, such as "internet marketing", and choose your weapon.

First, get the top 15 related, active keywords from Wordtracker (in this example, we quickly discovered that "strategic internet marketing" is an oft-searched-for but underused keyword that you can leverage). Then explore the thesaurus for synonyms and the lateralus for related terms according to Wordtracker. Next, you can explore the top 100 keywords in your niche according to Overture, where we can immediately see that the term "strategic internet marketing" is being optimized for at the U.S. state level by many firms. Interesting. Then try the Keyword Analysis tool, which will list the top 15 sites at Google for your term, including their number of backlinks, indexed pages and Google PageRank. Finally, you can explore the Google ranking of your site (or any site) for that term. If you don't fall into the top 15 sites, you can see where you are and how far you have to go. Great tool.
