101PublicRelations BlogEmail to a Colleague

There are many blogs on the subject of public relations, ranging from takes on corporate PR to industry news to top-level media strategy. This blog, like the company it represents, is all about how to generate no-cost publicity for your company. The tone is a bit overcaffeinated (like many PR pros we know), but underneath the hype you will find many quick tips and links to worthwhile articles, with a focus on how to talk to the media, how to distill your story into a 30-second pitch and how to use no-cost resources to craft your PR strategy - for instance, how to get your articles and press releases picked up by Google News.

AdrantsEmail to a Colleague

The subversive Adrants, which has been around for a while but is now in blog format, is your go-to blog for commentary on the "brilliance and idiocy of the media and advertising industry." Owner Steve Hall covers ad campaigns, insider industry news and emerging trends (product placement, wireless advertising, etc.) in the form of several daily posts delivered with "wit, humor and sarcasm." Should a daily blog visit become too taxing for your little fingers, you can have the entries emailed to you. A frequent check-in is a must, however, as Steve often gets the dirt from his sources via Instant Messenger or email and posts it right away, so he has been known to scoop even the daily news sites. BTW, you will also find an incredible list of recommended websites and blogs on the subjects of advertising and media at this site, among which you will find Web Digest For Marketers. Clearly, the man has good taste.

Business Blog ConsultingEmail to a Colleague

Not sure if a blog is relevant for your business? Check out this blog, in which owner Rick Bruner has vowed to capture every example of a business blog that he can find. The resulting directory is neatly categorized by industry, so whether you want to see examples of small business blogs, blogs used by technology firms, consumer products blogs or B2B blogs, you'll find them here. Each listing includes a brief review that explains how the blog is used or why it is notable. His posts are also quite informative and frequently contain hands-on tips for how to blog more effectively (those resources are also categorized on this site).

Marketing - WikipediaEmail to a Colleague

Bored by blogging? After all, blogs do represent the single voice of their creators (who sometimes drone on and on and on) with a slightly cumbersome interface for commentary and conversation. If you're ready for the Next Big Thing, check out Wiki. Wikiwiki (which means "fast" in Hawaiian) is basically a collaborative publishing tool which allows anyone to post anything to a website and, once posted, allows anyone else to edit what was previously written, write over it or add on to it. This technology has been around for a while, and this site represents the efforts of thousands of people who have been busy little worker bees compiling what amounts to an encyclopedia of knowledge on every topic under the sun. The Marketing entry contains hundreds of articles and definitions of marketing topics, all neatly cross-referenced for your educational pleasure. Wiki sites operate on a policy of trust, and basically, the guideline is that if you don't want your contribution to be edited, overwritten or annotated, don't post. Enjoy.

Nick Usborne’s Excess VoiceEmail to a Colleague

Nick Usborne is a champion of good online copywriting. His blog, which launched in March 2004, features a round-up of articles and resources for copywriters from both the "writing for the Web" and search engine optimization points of view. Many of the posts actually point back to articles housed within his exemplary, no-cost newsletter on online copywriting, also entitled Excess Voice. Favorites include tips on how to "frontload" your website copy so visitors get the most important messages first and a round-up of his can't-live-without SEO tools. One of the beauties of a visit to this blog is that you are forced to remember that there are 54 archived issues (and counting) of the newsletter ready for you to dive into when you finish reading the current post, so there's always something new to learn.

Online Marketing BlogEmail to a Colleague

Published by Lee Odden of TopRankResults.com, this blog covers news and resources of interest to those in the fields of online marketing, SEO, SEM and online public relations. In addition to frequent and timely updates with a minimal amount of personal pontification, you will also find a good list of other essential marketing blogs and sites of note here. The list includes, we were pleased to notice, a link to Web Digest For Marketers.

re:inventionEmail to a Colleague

While this blog is positioned as a resource for women entrepreneurs, it's also one of the best marketing blogs out there for everyone, no matter what your gender. First of all, it's jam-packed with links to hundreds of sites in the categories of branding, business resources, marketing, trend spotting and more - and they're all quality picks. But this blog is far more than a great launching point. Owner and consultant Kirsten Osolind posts frequently and vociferously on subjects ranging from Google AdWords to Martha Stewart. Read this blog and you may soon realize that Kirsten is a marketer you'd like to get to know. What better could be said about a blog?

Search Engine RoundtableEmail to a Colleague

The mission of the Search Engine Roundtable is to provide overworked and flummoxed SEM/SEO pros with a one-stop resource for the best search engine marketing discussion threads on the Internet. All the leading search engine forums are represented (HighRankings, WebmasterWorld, Cre8aSite, JimWorld, Search Engine Watch, etc.) and the compiled list of best-of posts allows you to quickly scan the thoughts, tips, daily news, recommended resources and tools and general angst-ridden discussions of the SEO industry in one fell swoop. Should you wish to participate in a given discussion, you simply link through to the appropriate forum and dive right in. Reading this blog can be considered a crafty, valiant attempt to save time and keep informed via expert opinion on the vast and ever-exploding world of search engine optimization.

Seth’s BlogEmail to a Colleague

Seth Godin receives this editor's highest praise - every time I visit his blog I learn something new. Whether it's word of a new Web tool or website that can't believe I haven't heard of yet, or mention of a book that I realize I need to read asap, or just a germ of a marketing idea that suddenly causes me to look at a problem in a whole new way, I know I'll find it here. At the time of this writing, I particularly enjoyed traveling along with Seth on his Business Blog Book Tour (a virtual book tour where he promoted his latest book, "Free Prize Inside: The Next Big Marketing Idea," via daily guest visits on top business and marketing blogs). My only critique is that I wish he would put together a "blogroll" of other recommended sites, as I'd love to know who or what he's reading for inspiration and that non-stop stream of great ideas. C'mon Seth, 'fess up.

The Unofficial Google WeblogEmail to a Colleague

The Unofficial Google Weblog is a member of the prolific Weblogs, Inc. community. Here, it's all Google, all the time. You'll find posts on Google news, Google technology and Google opinion as well as links to media coverage on Google in the "popular press." This blog is also an excellent model for blog organization, as it comes complete with handy links to related posts, a list of recent entries and comments, an edited "blogroll" (links to related blogs) and useful reader tools, all in one neatly arranged package. Should you wish to learn more about Google straight from the horse's mouth, you can visit the official Google Weblog at http://www.google.com/googleblog/ - although it tends toward the perky and entertaining - for instance, a post at the time of this writing featured a recipe for "Buttermilk Fried Chicken Elvis Loved - rather than a revealing look under the hood of the world's favorite website.
