    GoogleRankingsEmail to a Colleague

GoogleRankings shows you your site ranking in Google by keyword. If you enter what you think are the obvious keywords for your site, and you don't show up in the first 100, 200 or 1000 returns, you know you need to take a hard look at your keywords and site structure. You can also conduct an advanced search, mass keyword search or mass domain name search.

Another monitoring service worth noting is from CleverStat.com, which can be found at http://www.cleverstat.com/google-monitor-query.htm. After a no-cost download, the software queries Google and shows you the position of your site by keyword and also how well your competitors are doing. It keeps statistics for several URLs and several lists of keywords.

Matt Cutts: Gadgets, Google and SEOEmail to a Colleague

Matt Cutts is the head of Google's Webspam team and the go-to guy for webmasters, search engine optimization (SEO) people and tech reporters seeking his insider position on all things Google. Even his company calls him a "Google Guru." This link points to his personal blog, which mixes Google-specific links, tips and advice with personal observations. Check here first if you have a nagging question about how Google operates, and it's likely Matt has answered it with a relaxed, plain-talk explanation. Although Matt's blog has a distinctly personal tone, he organizes it like a pro, with a quick-reference guide organized by topic along the right side for those in a rush. Click the Google/SEO link to reach related interviews, presentations, tutorials and blog posts.

    NewsmapEmail to a Colleague

    NicheBOTEmail to a Colleague

When you get past the direct-mail puffery that pervades this site, you'll find one-stop shopping for keyword research and management to optimize Website content and buy more useful keywords for niche marketers. You can toggle between "easy" and "pro" modes to view the site; the easy version appears easier to navigate. It supports a paid service (the 14-day demo is $1) but offers plenty of complimentary information and services including a blog, newsletter, five-part podcast on backlinking and a page full of related links to other resources. As expected, it's heavy on Internet/niche marketing, search engine optimization and Web design. (Scroll to the bottom of the homepage to find the link to that page.)

Page Rank CalculatorEmail to a Colleague

Many have tried to uncover the secret formula behind Google's PageRank system, which assigns a rank to your website based upon its "link popularity." Several tools now exist which attempt to model the behavior of the Google PageRank algorithm so that you, too, can tinker with your website and see how changes might impact your standing. You or your tech staff can spend many a late night modeling PageRank behavior and learning how to improve your site with this tool brought to you by Mark Horrell. Should you want to learn more, you can find research papers about the Google PageRank algorithm at his site, and more discussion and another calculator can be found at WebWorkshop.net.

Prog PageRank Search ToolEmail to a Colleague

As you are building your linking hit list, do you have any idea which sites will deliver the most "bang for the buck"? One way to prioritize your list is to focus on those sites within your niche or topic area that have the highest Google PageRank, because their "endorsement" is likely to pay higher dividends than a similar site with a low PageRank. But how do you figure out a site's PageRank other than laboriously surfing with your Google toolbar? Why, with the PageRank search tool, of course. Simply search by keyword and you will receive a list of search results organized by Google PageRank. Brilliant... and something Google should have thought of long ago.

Sandbox Detection ToolEmail to a Colleague

New websites face a struggle in terms of getting appropriately ranked on Google. There is a waiting period of sorts that they must go through while Google determines just how important and valid the site and how nicely the site "plays with others" - hence the term "Google sandbox", which SEO experts use to describe this situation. The process that can take months as you build your virtual linking relationships and history. You can use this tool to detect whether you are is mired in the sandbox - ie., whether you rank disproportionately poorly in Google's rankings as compared to other search engines. Simply enter your URL and you will be given your results and an overall score based on how disparate your results are and the relative strength of SEO factors such as your links, your site age, your PageRank and so on. From this information you can determine whether you have a sandbox issue... or whether your site is simply not very well optimized for Google.

Search Engine Preparation ToolEmail to a Colleague

Is your site ready for prime time search engine inspection? Simply enter its URL and a keyword or phrase into this complimentary tool and you will find out. The results analyze your title tag, keywords, description, anchor tags, headlines, alt tags and more, complete with detailed suggestions for improvement. This tool could be a boon for search engine optimization consultants, who just may find justification for next month's retainer in the results.

    SearchStatusEmail to a Colleague

If you like the Alexa toolbar, you'll love SearchStatus. Configure this Firefox and Mozilla add-on to show Google PageRank, Alexa popularity or Compete.com ranking at a glance, then click again to get more info. Go right to Google Trends from the PageRank feature; click the Alexa bar to find traffic data and incoming, relevant or backward links; click the Compete bar to get a traffic count.

The sheer amount of information you can pull from one small source is compelling, such as meta tags, keyword density, keyword positioning and a Whois lookup. But it's more than just "ain't it cool?" This device shortens your commute from one ranking application to another and delivers everything you need to know, in easily readable formats, to measure a site's importance.

    SearchWikiEmail to a Colleague

Google SearchWiki allows searchers to do their own rankings and share commentary on their search results.

Searchers who are logged into their Google accounts can move a result up or down (e.g., from the No. 7 position to No. 1, or vice versa), remove it or write comments on the entry and view comments from other searchers. That's the "wiki" aspect of "SearchWiki," since a wiki is like an open-source encyclopedia.

The changes don't make keyword rankings obsolete - yet - and only logged-in users have access to the tools. However, it's another reminder that being No. 1 on your favorite keyword isn't the only path to search success, and also to Google yourself more often to see what people are saying about you.
