Google Rank PositionEmail to a Colleague

If you manually check your site's position on Google, you must do so one keyword or phrase at a time, which can be quite time-consuming. To expedite the process, this tool allows you to check your Google ranking for up to 15 keywords or phrases at once. The results are delivered in a neat display with your position for each keyword indicated in bright red. If you wish to see the actual page on Google where you appear for that keyword, simply click on the link provided. And should you wish to export your results as a .csv file, you can do that as well.

Google Ranking Factors SEO ChecklistEmail to a Colleague

Did you know that there are more than 100 SEO factors Google uses to rank websites in search results? Take a deep breath and dive into this checklist of 118 Google likes and dislikes that you can immediately add, improve or fix to make your website more Google friendly. Remember, the color green is "good" and the color red is "bad", so make sure you aren't doing the red ones. For example, Google likes to see keywords in your site's outgoing link anchor text and it likes a very positive new page to old page ratio. Google does not like to see your site linking to a "bad neighborhood" and will penalize your site if you are keeping suspect company, so do stay on top of your link neighborhood.

Google Rankings Ultimate SEO ToolEmail to a Colleague

Enter the URL of your website into this no-cost tool to see which words and phrases are used most and to generate a detailed report on keyword density. For example, after entering the URL for the Web Digest For Marketers newsletter home page, we discovered that the word "marketing" had a respectable keyword density of 20%, while the phrase "Larry Chase" had a keyword density of 741%. You can limit your research to particular words or particular portions of your site. After generating the report, you can see where you rank in Google for any of the desired words or phrases with the click of a button. Very useful.

Google Sponsored LinksEmail to a Colleague

This Google search option returns only sponsored link results in response to your search query. Simply type in the keywords or phrases related to your industry or topic and you will be served with a neat list of advertisers that includes a link to each website and their Google AdWords advertising copy. It's an essential stop before running any AdWords advertising, but also a great way to keep tabs on who's advertising and with what keywords on Google.

Google SuggestEmail to a Colleague

As you type into this search box, Google Suggest guesses what you're typing and offers suggested keywords in real time. Each keyword has the number of Google results listed in parentheses next to it. The more words you type, the more refined the suggestions become. For example, type the words "internet marketing" and at the time of this writing Google Suggests everything from "internet marketing consultant" (5,510,000 results) to "internet marketing strategy" (12,300,000 results) to "internet marketing secrets" (3,000,000 results). Not only will this help you perform better searches, but it also offers glimpses into underdeveloped search phrases that you can capitalize on for your own search engine optimization campaigns.

Google Tutor Advanced OperatorsEmail to a Colleague

Of course you consider yourself to be an Internet marketing expert, but even the best of us get flummoxed when trying to perform an advanced search on Google. This handy site is your one-stop resource for tips and tricks to help you use Google more effectively and efficiently. The brief, cogent summary of all of Google's advanced operator commands is of special interest. Advanced operators are query words that have special meaning to Google. Using them as part of your search query allows you focus, modify or improve your Google search in some way. For instance, adding "link:" to the beginning of a URL (as in link:wdfm.com) does not do a normal search; instead it allows you to find all the web pages that link to the specified URL, whether yours or those of your competitors. OK, smarty pants, so you say knew that one already. But did you know the following three?

  1. Adding keywords before the "site:" command allows you to search the specified site only for those specified keywords (SEO site:wdfm.com).
  2. Adding a tilda (~) before a keyword allows you to search for synonyms of that keyword. For example, if you want to search Google for an SEO primer, but you know that you would also be interested in an SEO introduction, review or tips (all synonyms of the word "primer"), phrase your search as follows: SEO ~primer (or phrase your search to search for those synonyms only within your favorite site, as follows: SEO ~primer site:wdfm.com)
  3. Using the "allintitle:" command followed by a keyword or keywords allows you to search for web pages that have your chosen keywords in their title, as in:

We like this tutorial because, in addition to explaining how to use each advanced operator, it also gives you a real-world example of why you would want to do so.

Google Webmaster Diagnostic ToolsEmail to a Colleague

There are new diagnostic tools provided by Google at Google Webmaster Central, which is a "members only" community center for webmasters and those who work behind the scenes on the technical and SEO aspects of their sites. The "Content Analysis" tool highlights issues like overly long page titles, titles that are too short, duplicate titles, duplicate meta descriptions, non-indexable content (i.e., images) and more. The new "Sitemaps" tool will list any errors encountered when specific pages from your Google sitemap were crawled.

Improving your Google search engine ranking sometimes feels like a mountain of tiny steps, but every one of those tiny steps gets you closer to SEO Nirvana (that is, a great Google ranking, of course). If you are not a member of Google Webmaster Central, you can apply at the URL above. We suggest you do so, if you haven't done it already.

Google YouTubeEmail to a Colleague

All Google, all the time. Google's own YouTube channel is a treasure trove of company videos - presentations and promos for Google services - that are ideal whether you need help with a Google application or a time-killer when your flight is delayed. The site mixes customer-generated content with conference presentations and promos, many featuring behind-the-scenes Google personnel as well as the usual public faces. View the complete list of videos, or click the Playlist tab to see them organized by subjects.

The tutorials combine talking heads, screenshots and demos and play as if you're getting one-on-one consultations with the app designers themselves. Those most useful for marketers are geared for those who have some experience with search marketing, campaign tracking and Webmaster tools and are looking to brush up their skills, reinforce their knowledge or delve deeper into the subject matter.

GoogleDuelEmail to a Colleague

This is a fun and useful site, especially when you're tired of wordsmithing content. Enter two words or phrases and find out which one occurs on more Web pages. How is this helpful? Let's say you are writing copy for your website and you can't decide whether to call yourself a "guru" or an "expert." Take it to GoogleDuel and you'll discover that the word "expert" is four times more popular and therefore probably a better word to use both to describe yourself and improve your site ranking.

Intrigued? You can also try out GoogleDuel Ultra, the advanced GoogleDuel tool. Pick two names, say Federal Express and UPS. Then pick three adjectives, such as reliable, on-time and speedy. Click the Submit button and find out who's tops for each of the adjectives according to the Google search engine. Remember, the final ranking depends upon how many Web pages mention the name/adjective combo you've entered. PS - Don't forget to play with GoogleDuel for Writers, which will tell you how any group of synonyms or similar phrases ranks in popular usage on the Web.

GoogleRankingsEmail to a Colleague

GoogleRankings shows you your site ranking in Google by keyword. If you enter what you think are the obvious keywords for your site, and you don't show up in the first 100, 200 or 1000 returns, you know you need to take a hard look at your keywords and site structure. You can also conduct an advanced search, mass keyword search or mass domain name search.

Another monitoring service worth noting is from CleverStat.com, which can be found at http://www.cleverstat.com/google-monitor-query.htm. After a no-cost download, the software queries Google and shows you the position of your site by keyword and also how well your competitors are doing. It keeps statistics for several URLs and several lists of keywords.
