    SpyFUEmail to a Colleague

If you handle pay-per-click (PPC) advertising, this is your ultimate reconnaissance tool. Use it to find out how much is being spent on PPC advertising by category or industry... or you may prefer to drill down and and discover how much a competitor is spending per day on PPC, plus the number of clicks their site is receiving per day, the average position of their ad and the average cost per click.

First look up your own domain to view the stats. Based upon the site's reporting of this editor's PPC spending, the deets (aka details) were spot on, from daily budget to total number of clicks per day and average cost per click. Amazing.

Or look up a specific keyword phrase. We looked up "search engine marketing" and found that (at the time of this writing) the top bid for that phrase was $13.42. Two of the top advertisers for the phrase were FathomSEO and Google. Drill down and you can see their top organic and paid competitors. The spying goes on and on. At the time of writing, we also spied on the top 500 biggest keyword advertisers (aol.com ranked number one with an estimated daily spend of $410,404) and the top 500 most expensive keywords ("data recovery services los angeles" was curiously the number one, ringing in at $52.82 maximum bid).

    SuccessDoctorEmail to a Colleague

Here is where you can find lots of articles, resources and services geared to boosting your response rates and maximizing your copy's selling power. This site is dedicated to creating the best sales copy possible. Professional copywriter Michael Fortin is the brawn behind the site.

At the time of writing, resources found at the site included hundreds of articles and blog posts. A few that caught our eye were "Using Vivid Mental Imagery" and "Creating Scarcity and Urgency". We also enjoyed the 51-page PDF entitled "The Death of The Salesletter: Web 2.0 and Its Impact On The Future of Internet Copy". Mr. Fortin also provides a forum for copywriters, an email newsletter and an RSS feed. As expected, you will also find a fair amount of sales copy dedicated to selling his products and services, which include copywriting, videos, sales courses and more.

    Sun BearEmail to a Colleague

Sun Bear provides sophisticated ASP-based direct marketing services for small- to medium-sized businesses. The software automates and manages databases, sales and marketing campaigns and response and lead management programs. One of the key features of this software is that all information is related to each prospect and is updated instantly. The software allows marketing groups to centralize their marketing leads while segmenting prospects and provides the ability to track and evaluate marketing campaigns. All screens and reports are customizable to fit reporting requirements. Contact the company for an online demonstration and monthly lease rates.

    TowerDataEmail to a Colleague

A clean, accurate email mailing list is a must for every online marketer. This company provides email list hygiene services that will fix email addresses with spelling and syntax errors and verify which addresses can or can not receive email. Cleaning your list instantly improves deliverability, of course, but did you know that inbox providers are also taking steps that will delay or even block your campaigns if your list continues to send to "dirty " addresses? For example, Microsoft turns abandoned Hotmail accounts into traps used to catch senders of unsolicited bulk email. If you have such email addresses on your list, you may be blacklisted, even though you are not deliberately doing anything wrong. Other inboxes might slow down your email delivery or block it all together if they find that you are sending email to too many dead addresses. Rather than researching every inbox provider individually, a service such as TowerData can tackle lurking problems in one swell foop.

    URL RewriterEmail to a Colleague

Static URLs generally perform better than dynamic URLs (which often have long strings of session or user ID code) in search results and take up less space on tiny mobile screens. Spam filters also can flag dynamic URLs in email messages. So, judicious rewriting sometimes is useful. If you're not an HTML code jockey, this handy tool from the SEO Chat blog will convert your dynamic URL to a friendlier-looking static URL.

Note: We use the term "judicious" because SEO experts don't advocate that you rewrite every URL on your site. This Search Engine Watch article, "Dynamic URLs: To Rewrite or Not to Rewrite...That is the Question" explains both sides of the issue. Before moving forward with this tool, read it to decide whether you should rewrite a specific dynamic URL.

    UserTestingEmail to a Colleague

If clicks and activity on your Website are stalling or dropping, how can you get fast, knowledgeable feedback? Focus groups are pricey and need lots of lead time to set up. UserTesting promises you a quick, inexpensive usability report that's like eavesdropping while someone tries out your site.

UserTesting picks its site testers from a database of screened, skilled amateurs, basically "real people" who perform the tasks you want tested on your site. While they're clicking around your site, they're recording their screens and voices so you see what they saw and hear their opinions.

Once the test is over, you'll receive both the recording and a written evaluation from each tester. At time of writing, the fee was $29 for one tester, up to $561 for 20 testers.

USPS Business Reply MailEmail to a Colleague

The US Postal Service has an easy-to-use Business Reply Mail service on its site. BRM encourages customers to reply to your business offer, because you pay the postage on the return mailer. It's also cost-effective, because you only pay for the mailers that are returned to you. At this site, what was once a formidable process can be easily managed from your desktop. First you register for a basic or high-volume permit and obtain your ZIP + 4 Code, and then you can get right down to creating your BRP mailers online from supplied templates. The USPS site will also store your mailers and related graphics for future use. Nice.

USPS Create and Send Mail OnlineEmail to a Colleague

At the US Postal Service site, you can conduct entire direct mail campaigns without ever leaving your desk. For companies that are new to the direct mail arena, there are step-by-step instructions on how to put together a direct mail campaign, plus links to authorized vendors that will produce your campaign for you. However, if you want to do it yourself, the easy-to-use, step-by-step digital NetPost service lets you select a document type (sales letter, brochure, etc.), upload the copy, edit it and then choose a mailing list. The electronic files are transmitted to a print site, printed, addressed and stamped and then sent to the Post Office for processing and delivery -- all with a one-day turnaround. Plus, you can buy your postage online ahead of time for discounts on mailing and faster service.

    VertsterEmail to a Colleague

Vertster specializes in the split run testing of online landing pages such as newsletter signups, lead generation forms, e-commerce product pages and other online direct marketing vehicles. Vertster's servers divide your site's traffic between multiple versions of your test pages, which are rotated through your audience to determine which page gives you the most return on your investment. Vertster's reports give you two types of feedback: 1) A creative confidence number that represents the likelihood that this specific creative will continue to perform at a similar conversion rate, and 2) A test confidence score that indicates to what degree the service predicts the winning creative will continue to win in the future. If you just want to explore the concept a little further, check out their blog entries for valuable tips on creating effective landing pages. If you want to give the technology a spin, there is a Small Business Pro pricing plan that will get your feet wet -- a monthly fee of $17.99(US) entitles you to test 10 creatives/20,000 pageviews.

WebTrends Dynamic SearchEmail to a Colleague

A few months prior to the time of this writing, WebTrends purchased a company then known as ClickShift. Since then, it has been rebranded as WebTrends Dynamic Search. This application organizes and optimizes your search marketing campaign in a couple of interesting ways. First of all, it spans across all search networks, so that you are strategically managing one campaign, not several property-specific ones. In addition, Dynamic Search will automatically determine the exact combination of networks, keywords, positions, creative and landing pages that work best for any of your selected goals, thereby taking the human trial-and-error guesswork and tedious manual manipulation out of the mix. Your advertising dollars are automatically allocated to those top-performing combinations of factors. Major search networks managed from WebTrends Dynamic Search include Google, MSN and Yahoo!.
